Dark Souls Remastered, 2, and 3 servers shut down

Bandai Namco and FromSoftware said this morning that all Dark Souls Remastered, 2, and 3 servers have been temporarily shut down due to a "problem with online services".

While the publisher hasn't provided any additional information, it's thought that the "problem" is a previously revealed PC exploit that allows a dangerous hacker to infiltrate your game and then remotely run code on your PC, thus seizing control of it.

Dark Souls Servers RCE attack to "damage" your computer

These hackers might use this RCE attack to "damage" your computer, "steal your logins and financial information saved on your machine," "run harmful programs like bitcoin miners," and more.

This bug was also reported to have caused problems in FromSoftware's following game, Elden Ring.

A remote code execution (RCE) attack was identified yesterday, according to a post on the Elden Ring subreddit.

These exploits are extremely dangerous since they allow a hacker to take control of your computer and brick it, steal sensitive data and files, or activate malicious software.

The exploit only works on PC and does not function on console versions of the Dark Souls games.

The servers for all Dark Souls games on PC are presently down, with no indication of when they will be back up.

While Bandai Namco hasn't acknowledged that the downtime is due to the hack, that appears to be the case.

Fortunately, this flaw was detected before the formal release of Elden Ring on February 25, 2022.
