While Battlefield 2042 had a good start, performance concerns, XP progression, and a limited amount of available content have seen the near-future military shooter's player count decline.
Is Battlefield 2042 going free to play?
EA has been "extremely disappointed" with the game's market performance, according to an industry insider, and is considering integrating some type of free-to-play capability within Battlefield 2042.
"EA is reportedly very disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 has performed and is 'looking at all the options' when it comes to the title, this is including looking at free-to-play in some capacity," Tom Henderson's tweet.

Battlefield 2042 is a disappointement
While Battlefield 2042 was the fifth best-selling game in the United States in 2021, EA has remained tight-lipped about actual sales figures.
The game's 3.2 update, which included a revamped scoreboard UI that fans have been seeking since launch, has seen some significant material drop this week.
Players in Battlefield 2042 can also fight back against the zombie hordes in a community-made mode called Zombie Survival until January 27.
