After the transaction concludes, Bungie will allegedly remain "an independent subsidiary" of Sony Interactive Entertainment, allowing it to "self-publish and reach players" in whatever way it sees fit, according to Sony Playstation.

This is in contrast to earlier Sony Playstation and Microsoft purchases, which saw previously multiplatform studios like Bethesda becoming exclusive.

In a news statement, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan remarked, “This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience,” ‘We understand how vital Bungie’s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow.”

Aside from large plans for Destiny 2, Bungie's famous and constantly updated sci-fi loot shooter, the 900-person studio is also working on other projects, including an original new IP set to release by 2025.

When Bungie released Halo as a launch exclusive for the original Xbox, it became a household name in the video game business.

Bungie eventually broke away from Microsoft to become self-sufficient, only to team up with Activision Blizzard to release Destiny 1.

Bungie also parted ways with the Call of Duty creator in 2019, after years of what was said to be a tense business relationship.

The two game firms will soon be owned by competing first-party console rivals, in a bizarre twist of fate only 2022 could bring.
