FIFA 23 will still be released this year, but it may be the last EA Sports game to bear the FIFA moniker.
According to reputable gaming news outlet VGC, EA CEO Andrew Wilson informed staff that the FIFA brand and license has been a "impediment" to EA Sports in recent years, in the clearest sign yet that the partnership between EA and FIFA may be coming to an end soon.
According to VGC's insiders, EA is still intending to release FIFA 23 this year, the follow-up to FIFA 22, with the game expected to incorporate material from FIFA World Cup events.
FIFA 23 Release Date
Wilson told staff in an internal summit in November that "the FIFA franchise has more meaning as a video game than it does as a ruling body of football," and that "what we get from FIFA in a non-World Cup year is the four letters on the front of the box," according to anonymous comments given to VGC.
Wilson also stated in the same article that the FIFA license has been a "impediment" to EA Sports' capacity to expand their brand, and also that "FIFA is just the name on the box, but they've precluded our ability to branch into the areas that players want."
Wilson's statements indicate that he feels EA would benefit from severing its partnership with FIFA, which would be a seismic move for EA, FIFA, and game enthusiasts after nearly 30 years of EA Sports FIFA games.
The PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC Windows (Steam), and Google Stadia platforms are expected to release FIFA 23 on September 30, 2022.
Is FIFA 23 Will Be the Last FIFA Game
On October 7, 2021, EA released a statement claiming that they were evaluating whether or not to extend its licensing arrangement with FIFA, which might result in a name change for one of the most well-known video game franchises in history.
On October 15, 2021, FIFA answered with a forceful statement of their own, implying that they may create their own game instead and making a dig at EA Sports.
