Indie marketplace Itch.io calls NFTs a "scam"

While some developers, such as Ubisoft, push through with NFTs regardless of how their own employees feel about them, and others, such as EA, seem content to wing it, one video game marketplace has released one of the most welcome statements I've seen from within the industry.

Indie marketplace Itch.io calls NFTs a "scam"

“A few have asked about our stance on NFTs,” itch.io, the global marketplace for indie games, said in a post over the weekend, adding:

Yes, absolutely. Because NFTS is a hoax, we shouldn't have to state it. That isn't a theory or a belief; it is the basis upon which they are built, and the whole thing is playing out exactly as a scam textbook would describe.

Nonetheless! This is video games, and we are in the latter stages of capitalism's decline.

Because there is a quick cash to be made before everything turns to shit, there are companies—many of which maintain a façade of fiscal respectability and employ thousands of people throughout the world—that are unconcerned about the glaring ethical and economic issues on display in the crypto industry.

Regardless, they leap in for a fast buck.

Of course, you could claim that it's quite easy to have itch.io to say this, because the site focuses on releasing small independent games and would stand to lose absolutely little business if it took this stance.

I would therefore say that if you or your company cares more about short-term profitability than the various flaws of the NFT space, then you just lost the gaming community.
