On the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, Cyberpunk 2077 will not run in 4K

Despite CD Projekt Red's claims to the contrary, Digital Foundry has verified that Cyberpunk 2077 does not play at 4K on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077 does not play at 4K on the PS5 or Xbox Series X

On Patch 1.5, the company's vaunted ray-tracing features only bring minor aesthetic enhancements to Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay.

CD Projekt Red published Patch 1.5 for Cyberpunk 2077 last week, which was timed to coincide with a next-gen update for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X consoles.

CD Projekt Red said at the time that the next-gen upgrade would allow the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to achieve a 4K resolution with 'dynamic framerate dependant scaling.' In other words, depending on the graphics level you have enabled, the game will adapt its resolution to maintain 30 or 60 frames per second.

Digital Foundry, on the other hand, has shown in its recent film that this is not the case. Unfortunately, neither the PlayStation 5 nor the Xbox Series X are capable of delivering Cyberpunk 2077 in 4K, also known as 2160p, to screens (3,840 x 2,160).

Instead, Digital Foundry shows that the PS5 can achieve 1728p in performance mode, which is set at 60 frames per second.

In addition, when performance mode is set, the console downscales to 1260p to maintain a near-60 FPS gaming experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 Update

The Xbox Series X has a similar narrative to tell. Microsoft's latest machine, for some reason, manages somewhat higher resolutions than Sony's, albeit only modestly.

In performance mode, the Xbox Series X ranges from 1382p to 1782p, a far cry from the 2160p that CD Projekt Red claimed would be attainable in Patch 1.5.

In ray-tracing mode, both consoles maintain 1440p, which CD Projekt Red keeps at 30 FPS.

Likewise, the Xbox Series S aims for this resolution and framerate, but in high-demand regions, it downscales to 1296p.

However, unlike the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S lacks any ray-tracing capabilities.

However, unlike the PC version of the game, ray-tracing is limited to local shadows.

As a result, even if CD Projekt Red had to cap the game at 1440p, Digital Foundry decides that image quality gains are minor.

Other enhancements to Cyberpunk 2077 on current-generation consoles are also included in Patch 1.5, as we've detailed individually.
