Elden Ring poison swamps and the game difficulty, Miyazaki clarifies

Elden Ring is expected to have a higher completion rate than previous Souls games, and because 'I can't help myself,' Elden Ring features several poison swamps, according to Miyazaki.

Elden Ring game difficulty

In a new interview with the PlayStation Blog, FromSoftware head Hidetaka Miyazaki mentioned the flexibility of Elden Ring, as well as the studio's infamously challenging games. "I want novice players to feel relaxed and free to tackle the game at their own speed," Miyazaki stated.

"I realize that, while we provide games with a high level of difficulty, we create them in such a way that overcoming them feels rewarding. But I don't want novice players to be too concerned or stressed about the challenge... They can return to something later if they reach a snag, giving them the opportunity to grow rather than banging their heads against a wall over and over."

Miyazaki stated that the Elden Ring team did not "specifically try to reduce the game's difficulty," but he believes that the open world flexibility and ease of multiplayer play compared to past Souls games will ensure that more people complete the game.

If you make it all the way to the finish, Miyazaki has promised that a New Game+ option will be waiting for you. Elden Ring will be released on February 25th.

Elden Ring has multiple poison swamps

Elden Ring, like every previous Souls game, will unfortunately have a poison swamp: a supposedly terrible place where you'll be attacked by foes and projectiles that will inflict you with the poison debuff's constant ticking damage. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director, can't help but make one every time.

"While making this game I rediscovered my love for making poison swamps," Miyazaki said. "I know how people feel about them but I suddenly realize I'm in the middle of making one and I can't help myself. It just happens."

This time, the swamp (or swamps) will have not only poison and toxic effects (which Dark Souls players will recognize as a more horrific type of poison), but also a new affliction known as Scarlet Rot.

Scarlet Rot appears to be the worst of the three, and Miyazaki expressed his hope that "you look forward to it." This is concerning, given that he is involved in the development of games in which bizarre reptiles can petrify and kill you instantly.
